Support Furever Fosters

What is a furEver foster?

Save Our Scruff’s Furever Foster program allows dogs to remain permanently in foster care until end of life, as their circumstances may be better with Save Our Scruff by their side indefinitely. That could be due to quality of life at intake, or other needs that arise that could affect their ability to be adopted. In these cases, it is our organization's ethical desire to support care in a different way than adoption.

Eligible dogs are considered on a case-by-case basis and can be determined Furever Foster candidates prior to entering SOS care, or once already in SOS care.

Situations will vary from dog to dog, but a few examples of Furever Foster factors include:

• Dogs with shorter lifespans or advanced age
• Complex medical needs
• Behavioural challenges
• Palliative care
• Terminal illness
• Pain/discomfort existing in daily life

This also means SOS will be covering some of the costs for Furever Fosters, which will vary from dog to dog. Depending on the dog’s individual needs, some of the covered costs could include:

• Routine vetting and/or medical expenses
• Particular vetting associated with non-routine vetting
• Training costs
• Supplies needed to care for that particular dog

MATEO

This Peekapoo is a sweet little old man. At 14 years old, he recently found his Furever Foster home to live out his best life. His home in Hamilton is a dream come true for him — humans that love him and support his individual needs, plus a couple super-fun senior dog siblings to keep him company. He was an owner surrender due to a family tragedy, and SOS was committed to matching him to a home that could support him until end of life. Mateo is likely deaf and has sight issues, as well as some behavioural challenges. SOS chose to support him as a Furever Foster because these challenges made it difficult to match him with an adoptive home that could support him. In his Furever Foster home, SOS covers his vetting and training costs, as well as additional care expenses such as regular grooming. He’ll also occasionally go to dog daycare for boarding if his foster is out of town, as he’s very handler-specific. As a senior with particular health needs, Mateo requires regular check-ups and monthly pain medication. His vetting costs total approximately $72/month, or $865/year.

TILDA

Our youngest dog on the Furever Foster roster, this hound mix is around 8 years old and living at Paws Above in King City. Her situation is unique because well, she’s a unique gal, what can we say? Tilda found her Furever Foster home in a boarding & training facility because we learned over time that Tilda does not do well in a city/home environment. We knew she needed to live in a quiet, rural environment. And she needed a home with ideally just one human she knows & trusts. In boarding, she has found her ideal home. At Paws Above, she has the opportunity to live a structured farm life with people she's grown to trust over the course of her time in their care since 2021. Under the Furever Foster program, SOS covers Tilda’s vetting costs, along with her boarding fees. Her vetting totals about $62/month, or $746/year. Her boarding costs are $40/day, which totals $1,200/month, or $14,600/year.
